Building A Positive School Culture Using Technology
How can educators use technology to build a positive school culture? This session delivered at NETA 2018, at Omaha’s CentureLink, in Ballroom 202, April 19, 11:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m., is a focus on building communication, collaboration, and creativity among students. Ideas to develop citizenship and life long learning will be demonstrated, including distance learning ideas. Apps used include Book Creator, photo editing and drawing apps, YouTube, and story telling ideas. The goal is to help students to become a positive influence for the future. Connecting Your Classroom to the World
Distance learning enrichment connections will be discussed, utilizing a variety of resource sites. Lessons include classroom collaborations, scheduled virtual field trips, and speakers. Distance Learning events include Omaha’s Henry DoorlyZoo, Durham Museum, the National Park System, the National Football Hall of Fame, National Baseball Hall of Fame, and medical sites. The following video was recorded in 2016 and is a similar school assembly presented by Dave Roever at Pleasanton High School on April 11, 2018.
Dave’s impactful message is to reach students and be a positive voice in their lives. Dave stated: “My first and foremost goal in a public school is to connect with the student body through a message applicable to their personal needs. I am 71 years old. That’s physically. I’m probably 19 years old mentally. I still think like a young person, because I work with young men and women constantly. It has been my career.
One thing that is not my goal – I do not, have not, and will not condemn students in their behavior regardless of how out of the box it may be to my own tradition and values. I do however, present through a unique story of survival in a horrible war and a lifetime of speaking into the lives of students. My aim is to make them aware that drugs, alcohol, sex and violence are not the bridge to happiness. I accomplish this goal with the incorporation of a lot of humor. I have seen in over 30 years of public education, that I can get into the heart of any kid with a message of hope. Laughter is still the best medicine.
I also bring an important and timeless message of encouragement to students who are suicidal and melancholy. Many students today face challenges including, but not limited to: drug use, experimentation with alcohol; broken relationships, depression and self-harm, just to name a few.”

On January 25, 2017, Pleasanton Third Grades connected to Denise Brennan-Nelson, author of “Leopold the Lion” and nineteen other books. Ms. Nelson inspired the third grade class to develop strong reading skills for the future. She also inspired them to be creative writers, using their imaginations to tell a story. This interactive distance learning connection allowed students to ask questions directly to Ms. Nelson. In addition to Pleasanton students, schools from Michigan and Wisconsin were also included in the connection. This even was scheduled through the CAPSpace Clearninghouse distance learning office in Michigan.
Pleasanton fourth graders connected with Laurie Keller, author of “Scattered States of America”, on January 24, 2017. The virtual field trip was completely student driven, with students asking questions directly to Ms. Keller. The interactive face to face distance learning connection was organized through the CAPSpace Clearninghouse in Michigan. The purpose of this author connection is to inspire students to be lifetime readers and creative writers.
Mr. Chad Johnson, Education Specialist from the Nebraska Public Power District, shared a wealth of information and activities with Pleasanton students on January 24, 2017. The schedule included:
8:15-9:00 a.m. – Nuclear Energy with the high school physics class
9:00-9:45 a.m. – Robotics with Fifth Graders
9:45-10:30 a.m. – Science of Energy with Third Graders
10:42-11:30 a.m. – Renewable Energy with Eighth Graders
12:30-1:00 p.m. – Robotics with Second Graders
1:00-1:50 p.m. – Electricity with Ninth Graders
2:00-2:45 p.m. – Robotics with Sixth Graders
2:45-3:30 p.m. – Robotics with Fourth Graders
Pleasanton Second Graders connected to Lisa Wheeler, author of Turk and Runt.
Pleasanton Second Graders connected to Lisa Author, author of Turk and Runt, on November 21st, 2016. Students in Wisconsin and Michigan also connected at the same time, with each school’s students asking questions to Ms. Wheeler. This event was scheduled through the virtual field trip clearinghouse TWICECAPSpace in Michigan.
